Class 2A The upgrading process

This course at SSDC have 3 practical lessons and a theory classroom lesson. Till date I had completed 2 practical, the theory lesson and circuit revision.

The theory lesson can be taken at any point of time but must be taken before booking the Traffic Police test.

There are no road practices for all 3 lessons and all practicals were in the circuit. I think that's because this course targets at handling a bigger motorcycle with a higher performance.

Lesson 1
This lesson covers the 5 of the 7 circuit courses:
a) Emergency braking
b) Narrow plank
c) 4 pylons
d) Bumpy course
e) Slope

Lesson 2 covers the remaining 2:
f) Figure 8
g) Crank course
h) TP assessment course familiarisation
i) 2 to 3 rounds of TP test route practice

Theory revises the following in general:
1) New traffic demerit points systems and the new rules
2) Bad habits
3) Safety videos
4) essential updates
All of the theory topics are still fresh for a 1 year old me, but many of those in the class had taken class 2B many years or decades ago. I hope it's enriching for them.

Circuit Revision (CR) can only be book after Lesson 2. All lessons and CR are $32 at point of writing, no refund but can do try-sell if can't make it.

Details here
Lesson 1
This lesson covers the 5 of the 7 circuit courses:
a) Emergency braking
This requires the rider to reach 40-45km/hr and brake over a short distance to a complete stop without looking down and keeping it at the 3rd gear. It's pretty nervous for me the first time, but was fine once I got the hang of it.

b) Narrow plank
Half clutch applying minimal brake rarely should get you through at least 8 sec. I did a 11 sec and got ticked off by a instructor. LoL!!!

c) 4 pylons
Same as Class 2B, get onto 2nd gear before reaching the first yellow line. Both hands cannot touch clutch or brake, and bike cannot touch the pylons. Done under 6 seconds.

d) Bumpy course
Interesting new course for me. Get into half standing position (WTF is that pose anyway? Make sure the person in front of you isn't a lady... You'll get distracted somehow... Haha), using half clutch and slightly throttling to get the bike through. Can't remember the timing. I got distracted. :-P

e) Slope
Complete stop with right signal on. Get the biting point while on foot brake. Check inwards before releasing foot brake and proceed. If I had stopped at the lower pocket, I had to make sure I stop at the next pocket, redo same thing and proceed to cross the slope. Before reaching the white line, switch signal to left, stop check inwards before turning left.

Lesson 2 covers the remaining 2:
f) Figure 8
Ensure left signal is on. Check back on right before moving off. Get into 2nd gear and cancel the signal before turning left into the course (before the yellow line). Line of sight is important, look further across the other side and move sight along the course. I realized I can't look too near or I will be thrown off balance and start to wobble. Controlling the throttle and using the foot brake is important tip as well. I need to bend my body with the bike to balance the momentum.

g) Crank course
This course is always tricky for me. Align the bike straight at the starting point, I never knew about this(See tip after this course on how to align bike). Moving off at gear 1, turn left clutch in and kick into gear 2 while in free clutch (strange Class 2B requires to be in gear 2 before yellow line because we aren't suppose to hold the clutch in the course???). Then turn right, throttle to speed up the middle segment of the course. Before reaching the left turn, check traffic and signal right. Here's the bloody tricky part,
a) if no traffic in the circuit, turn left of this final part of crank course (crossing the yellow line) and turn right to the assessment route.
b) if there are cars along the assessment route where you need to stop (f***ing shit!), turn left of this final part of crank course, gradual stop and change down gear 1! Sometimes I could not get all my limbs synchronise (garang gabo siah) and remained in gear 2.
Tip: Apparently before turning left into the pocket for the starting position, keep bike slightly on the right side on the lane and do a wide turn into the pocket where the bike will be straight.

This post generally is to help myself remember the tips learnt along the way. Class 2A is so fast and furious before I knew it, I'm waiting for TP test already.

For those reading this post, hope it helps you
a) prepare mentally for enrolling to class 2A/2,
b) get through some of the course in the circuit,
c) pass this Class 2A smoothly.

Have fun while learning! Don't be shy to talk to strangers while taking the lesson, sometimes they do have some personal tips to share. You might see me there! Not difficult to spot me if you have read all my posts.
